The militarization of space began with the growth of satellite technology back in the 1950s.

Up to now though, in spite of much discussion of so-called Star Wars, it hasn’t been weaponized.

And, as Alexandra Stickings. Research Fellow in Space Policy and Security at RUSI tells The Agenda’s Stephen Cole, there’s real hope that will never happen. Space, she says – and particularly the International Space Station - are in fact a great example to the world about cooperation between nations.

“It isn’t in anyone’s interest to have full scale conflict in space….. We could see a huge proliferation of space debris and potentially the inability to use orbits."

That technology has changed the face of war is beyond question. But the next consideration is what impact those advances might have on peacekeepers and attempts to avoid and prevent future conflicts.

Former War Correspondent Martin Bell has written a new book - “War & Peacekeeping: Personal Reflections on Conflict and lasting Peace” in which he looks back at the conflicts across eighty countries he covered for the BBC.

He tells Stephen Cole he looks forward to a future where China and the U.S. come together as a global peace force, but has concerns about the future for peacekeeping efforts across the globe.
“Peacekeepers seem always slow to catch up, and know that their communication need to be better.” He says, adding: “It takes not only better technology, but a sufficiency of numbers.”
