This line was built by the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company and opened in 1885 as part of the through line to Longburn near Palmerston North.

The line rises 150 metres on a ruling 1:36 gradient over its 10Km length. It was cut off from the remainder of the line at this location in 1937 following the opening of the 4.3 Km Tawa No. 2 Tunnel.

This was the first line to be electrified in Wellington in 1938 and these electric units were first operated from that time.
