Celebrating squid is an exceptional way to spend any day! In honor of World Squid Day, we thought a gorgeous Moroteuthopsis longimana was worthy of revisiting. International cephalopod awareness days happen each year in October — we celebrate octopuses on the 8th, in honor of their eight arms, and squid on the 10th, to acknowledge their ten appendages (eight arms and two tentacles).

Also known as a giant warty squid, this cephalopod is a species of hooked squid characterized by 33 hooks and marginal suckers. Moroteuthopsis longimana live in the Southern Ocean, where several species of squid play a critical role as both prey and predator. For whales, seabirds, and sharks, squid are a tasty snack. For lanternfish and crustaceans such as krill, squid are animals to avoid or get eaten by.

ROV pilots filmed this deep-sea salsa during the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition with #OceanCensus at 1,207 meters. The 35-day deep-sea expedition team observed thriving polar ecosystems, discovered new hydrothermal vents, coral gardens, and many suspected new species. This was the same expedition that filmed the first confirmed sighting of a juvenile colossal squid (the footage is pinned to the top of our Instagram and YouTube channels, check it out!).
