[demo of Fog Breathing] No, it’s not frozen. This is just a reminder of the exercise we learned last week.
Hi everybody. How are you doing? I figured I would start with a little bit of humor and a little bit of a repeat of what we learned last week--the difference between post traumatic stress disorder and between post traumatic growth.
So, we talked about how post traumatic stress disorder is a result of a mindset, or it will arise usually as a result of a mindset of how we’re viewing adversity. Now this is not to belittle the realities of trauma and the difficulties and the challenges that some people face--and some are more challenging than others, no doubt. So, we talked about last week that important mindset difference between viewing, “Is this adversity that I'm facing, is it overwhelming? Is it a threat?” Or is it more likely to activate the sympathetic nervous system dominance? It’s gonna more likely put us into states of fight, flight or freeze. It’s gonna turn on that alarm switch that we talked about last week.
Or is the challenge that I'm facing an opportunity? Is the adversity that I'm facing an opportunity? Do I see it as a challenge that I can grow from, learn from--in a certain sense, become more of who I really am by facing this adversity, by looking at it in the eye--some of the cliche things.
Now, oftentimes, this isn't a tough, macho approach. Sometimes it means relaxing more, or it means surrendering, it means letting go. It's a no one-size-fits-all approach but it is an important difference in the mindset--is this a challenge, or is this a threat?
So we also talked last week about sympathetic nervous system dominance versus parasympathetic nervous system dominance. Undoubtedly, if you're a neuroscientist--this is an oversimplification. I'm not saying that this is the only thing that's going on in the brain, the PNS--parasympathetic nervous system--the SNS--sympathetic nervous system. They're both absolutely interchanging. They are both absolutely imperative. However, it is true that we can gain some useful practices and perspectives by focusing on becoming more parasympathetic nervous system dominant.
So we said how do you flip the switch with the easiest way to flip the switch between turning off your alarm switch and turning on the thriving mode of your nervous system? We said that was the breath, right? And the breath gets us deep into the autonomic nervous system. Every single time we inhale, we activate the sympathetic nervous system. Every single time we exhale, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system. So then by nature, if we extend the length of the exhale, we're going to become more and more parasympathetic nervous system...(CONTINUED...)
