South Korea secures deal to export M-SAM II missile system to Saudi Arabia

South Korea will ship ten of its domestically developed Cheongung-II medium-range surface-to-air missile batteries to Saudi Arabia.
The 3.2 billion dollar contract is the second sale of the system to a Middle Eastern country.

South Korea has announced a deal to export to Saudi Arabia ten M-SAM2 mid-range surface-to-air missile batteries.
According to Seoul's defense ministry on Tuesday, the deal, worth some 4-point-2 trillion Korean won, or 3-point-2-billion U.S. dollars, was sealed last November, between South Korean defense firm LIG Nex1 and the Saudi Arabian Defense Ministry.

The core weapon system of Korea Air and Missile Defense, called the "Cheongung" M-SAM2, provides defense against air attacks and surface-to-air defense capability against aircraft.
Also known as the "Korean Patriot," the M-SAM2 uses hit-to-kill missiles capable of intercepting incoming missiles.
The system is the key force in lower-tier defense, which aims to intercept missiles at an altitude of thirty to forty kilometers.
The advanced technology system includes simultaneous engagement of multiple targets, high-mobility with canard and side jet thrusters, and direct targeting with a power-enhancing warhead.

This is LIG Nex1's second export deal.
It previously signed a deal with the United Arab Emirates in 2022.
Meanwhile as part of a visit to the Middle East, South Korea's defense minister Shin Won-sik and his Saudi Arabian counterpart signed a memorandum of understanding on Sunday in Riyadh.
Under the MOU, the two countries will establish a joint committee to cooperate in research and weapons development in the mid to long-term.

On Tuesday, Shin visited Qatar and signed an MOU on furthering the two countries' defense and arms cooperation, in light of the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year.
