How To Prune Eucalyptus Trees Including Pollarding and Coppicing

Описание к видео How To Prune Eucalyptus Trees Including Pollarding and Coppicing

In this pruning video, I will show you how to pollard and coppice Eucalyptus to create new young shoots for flower bouquets.

We are Annette & Ricahrd and this Eucalyptus hedge is in the back garden of our property here in UK. We live in South Buckinghamshire in the beautiful Chilterns. Our Zone is equivalent to US zone 8. We average about 707mm (27.8”) of annual rainfall and have heavy clay soil.

The Eucalyptus bushes that we are pruning today are about 3 years old. These shrubs started as young plants, about 50cm (20”) high. We have occasionally pruned them over the years by cutting the odd branch for floral decorations and trimming the top of the hedge to maintain a reasonable height.

This hedge serves multiple purposes for us; we use it to create a courtyard feel around our seating area. It also serves as an evergreen screen between our bedroom and the rest of our property and, lastly, we use the hedge to take cuttings for flower arrangements.

We have found this Eucalyptus grows extremely well here in Buckinghamshire and that it doesn’t need any winter protection; often withstanding freezing temperatures up to -7 Celsius. The hedge does get full sun and faces east/west. It is planted on heavy clay that has been topped with about 30cm of good garden soil. Once these bushes were established, we found that they didn’t require any extra water or nutrients. We have had the occasional aphid problem, but this is probably due to the density of the planting more than anything else. Being large trees, it is probably not ideal to plant them as close to each other as we have but I feel that the pollarding will help with airflow and hopefully the aphids!

It’s difficult to know how to express myself on social media when there is so much sorrow and devastation in the world we live in, particularly in Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine.
