Are Eco-friendly Products Really Eco-friendly? Pt 1: Non-woven Bags.

There is a rising awareness of how plastic waste dumped in the sea is killing more and more animals. Thus eco-friendly plastics are produced to save the environment and to reduce the amount of plastic used everyday. One of the eco-friendly alternatives to the regular plastic bag is the non-woven bag. Non-woven bags are light, strong and easy to clean, making them reusable. However, most non-woven bags are still made of plastic. It would be eco-friendly if it were made of biodegradable material. However, over 90% of such bags are made of polypropylene. A material which takes about 50 years to degrade. The weight and volume of a non-woven bag can also be up to 10 times more than a plastic bag. While you can reuse a non-woven bag many times, once you throw it away, it is still going to end up in a landfill. The need for landfills is one of the primary causes of animal extinction. So, are non-woven bags eco-friendly? They are widely used as corporate gifts and promotional giveaways for free. Therefore, they can be found many in a household which would eventually be thrown away, because there is just TOO MANY! Left unchecked, over a period of time, coupled with slow degradation, the potential environment impact can be much more dangerous than current plastic bags' usage. It may become a greater pollution source than plastic.
