STORYLINE:
Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma cast his ballot before supporters in Freetown on Saturday, in an election marking the third presidential vote since the West African nation's 11-year conflict ended in 2002.
Police and army personnel guarded the polling station where the President voted.
Koroma was surrounded by reporters and observers and a crowd outside chanted "world best" as he left.
People queued up to cast their own votes.
"I am happy about these presidential and parliamentary elections, I really do appreciate them. It is really peaceful and I am happy to have cast my ballot. There was a lot of pushing in the queue but I voted peacefully," said Musu Kamara, a voter.
A decade after Sierra Leone's brutal civil war, voters were called to choose between an incumbent President who has provided new roads and free health care and a field of opposition candidates who decry the poverty and pace of economic recovery.
Koroma won office in 2007 on promises to help uplift the diamond-rich nation and sought to reassure voters with campaign signs that read: "I Will Do More."
His supporters especially point to strides made in the country's health care system through a programme offering free medical aid.
And they also see hope for Sierra Leone because of several offshore oil discoveries made in the last three years.
Koroma faces eight challengers including the leading opposition figure Julius Maada Bio, a retired brigadier-general from the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP).
Koroma's health care programme has proved enormously popular in a country hard hit by cholera earlier this year and that has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the world.
However, doubts remain about the long-term feasibility of the health programme, and the opposition also believes that more needs to be done to promote job creation.
Bio calls himself the "father of democracy" after his brief three-month tenure as head of state in 1996 before handing over power to a democratically elected civilian government.
