Scottish Gaelic has been spoken as an indigenous language in Scotland for thousands of years, and it is as different from English as Japanese is and equally hard to learn. Once spoken in much of Scotland it is incredibly rare these days, spoken by only 1% of Scotland’s population, but I visited the remote Scottish island of Uist where it is still used to see what locals would think of an American tourist speaking this ancient tongue.
