Imagine a fighter plane that was ahead of its time, with speed, firepower, and innovation that could have changed the course of World War II. This is the story of the Westland Whirlwind Mk I – the RAF's forgotten gem that deserves a closer look.
So, let's take a trip back to the mid-1930s, when the Royal Air Force was looking for a new kind of fighter. They wanted something that could hit harder and fly farther than the iconic Spitfire and Hurricane. Enter the Westland Whirlwind, born from Air Ministry Specification F.37/35. This was a game-changer – a single-seat, day-and-night fighter armed with four 20mm cannons. That's right, four cannons! Most fighters at the time were armed with machine guns, so this was a massive leap forward.
Designed by Westland Aircraft in Yeovil, Somerset, under the leadership of W.E.W. 'Teddy' Petter, the Whirlwind was a sleek, low-wing monoplane with a top speed of around 360 miles per hour. It was powered by two Rolls-Royce Peregrine engines, each pumping out 885 horsepower. Its bubble canopy gave pilots excellent visibility, and its compact design made it surprisingly nimble.
But what really set the Whirlwind apart was its firepower. Those four Hispano-Suiza 20mm cannons in the nose delivered a devastating 600 rounds per minute, making it the most heavily armed fighter of its era. Unlike wing-mounted guns, the nose placement meant no convergence issues – every shot hit hard and true. It was built to take down heavily armored German bombers, and it could also carry up to 1,000 pounds of bombs, earning it the nickname 'Whirlibomber' in its later fighter-bomber role.
The Whirlwind was packed with cutting-edge tech for its time, including retractable landing gear, ducted radiators, and a T-tail design. But despite its promise, the Whirlwind faced a major hurdle – its engines. The Rolls-Royce Peregrine was powerful but plagued by reliability issues and overheating problems. By 1940, Rolls-Royce shifted focus to the Merlin engine, leaving the Whirlwind in the dust.
Only 114 aircraft were produced, including two prototypes, and only three RAF squadrons ever flew it. It first flew on October 11, 1938, and entered service in June 1940, just in time to miss the Battle of Britain. But the Whirlwind proved its worth in other roles, scoring its first air-to-air kill in February 1941 and excelling in low-level ground attack missions.
Despite its brief career, the Whirlwind was a pioneer. It showed what a twin-engined fighter could do and paved the way for later designs like the Bristol Beaufighter. Its blend of speed, firepower, and innovation made it a standout, even if it never got the recognition it deserved.
