The President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, responded forcefully to international accusations alleging that his government persecutes the Jewish community, dismissing them as unfounded and disconnected from reality. In recent remarks, Lukashenko stated: “Listen, we are being accused of persecuting Jews, yet in Belarus, for example, half of the government is Jewish. Where are we persecuting anyone?”, casting doubt on the credibility of such claims.

According to the Belarusian leader, these accusations are part of a political narrative driven from abroad with the aim of discrediting his government and isolating the country on the international stage. Lukashenko argued that Belarus is a multiethnic and multiconfessional state, where different communities—including the Jewish community—actively participate in the political, economic, and social life of the country without institutional restrictions.

The leader in Minsk emphasized that the presence of Jewish citizens in senior government positions is tangible proof that there is no policy of discrimination or persecution. In his view, this reality directly contradicts allegations of antisemitism, which he claims are being used as a rhetorical tool by international actors critical of his administration.

Lukashenko also questioned what he described as the double standards of some Western governments, which—according to him—overlook serious internal problems in their own countries while issuing moral accusations against Belarus. For the president, such rhetoric does not reflect a genuine defense of human rights, but rather serves to exert political pressure and justify sanctions or coercive measures.

These statements come amid ongoing tensions between Belarus and several European and North American countries, which have accused the Lukashenko regime of authoritarianism and political repression. From Minsk, however, officials insist that many of these criticisms are driven more by geopolitical interests than by an objective assessment of the country’s internal reality.

With this message, Lukashenko seeks to dismantle one of the most sensitive accusations leveled against his government internationally and to reaffirm his narrative of sovereignty and resistance in the face of what he considers disinformation campaigns. For the Belarusian government, the inclusion of minorities within the structures of power is presented as evidence of internal stability in an increasingly hostile international environment.
