The purpose of a gift is to communicate something between the giver and receiver. Good gifts say…“Thank you!” or “You’re welcome!” “Here’s something to remind you of us!” “We appreciate you!” “Here’s a sample.” “We’ve got it and we want to show it!” “Congratulations!” or “You’re important to us.” Bad gifts say, “If you do something for us, we can do something for you.” “There’s more where that came from.” “We hope you will see things our way.” or “Here’s a little gratuity just between us.” Don’t be naive about what a gift is REALLY communicating.

Inappropriate gifts undermine customer relationships. A relationship based on exchanging inappropriate gifts is phony and disingenuous. They hurt your company’s reputation. One corrupt act can tarnish the reputation of the entire company. Inappropriate gifts put your company in legal jeopardy. Many inappropriate gifts are not harmless exchange but are considered bribery. They are often evidence of larger scale corruption and other illegal activities. Consider the intentions in the gift. A bad intention would be to influence a purchasing decision or as part of a Quid Pro Quo (or “This for That”) exchange. Another bad intention would be as a kind of “unofficial” sort of compensation for rending services or also known as a bribe for preferential treatment or kickback to pocket funds through a back door.
