See how a locket pendant is made. We show you how the precious jewellery is made from sheet gold in the traditional way, step by step.

The individual parts of the locket are embossed and cut out of sheet metal using steel tools. The embosser who is in charge of this process has to exercise the greatest care and must have a great deal of skill and experience. After each step, the individual parts are brought to an annealing point by heating to soften the gold. A mistake during processing will cause the metal sheet to tear.

The individual parts are soldered together by a specialised goldsmith and perfected by hand. This requires the utmost precision, because the parts have to fit together exactly. The locket has a mechanical detail: a hinge is made by hand so that it can be opened to reveal the photos inside.

A special feature is the so-called guilloché. A regular wave pattern is engraved into the gold using a historical apparatus. This wave pattern, together with the later applied enamel layer, creates a wonderful play of colours and makes the pendant a shining precious object.

A star is sawn out of sheet gold by hand and applied to the surface. This process is very sophisticated because the slightest mistake could destroy the workpiece. One trick is that very small beads of white gold are positioned in the holes of the star. These become liquid when heated with a flame, thus bonding the star to the guilloche surface of the locket.

Now the enameller can get to work. The glass powder is carefully applied by hand and fired at approx. 850°. This process is repeated three times. In the last step, the surface has to be polished and any impurity has to be removed by hand in a time-consuming process.

Now the piece is further refined by setting brilliant-cut diamonds. A dedicated specialist sets each stone individually with gravers. The position of the diamond is determined by drilling a hole. Four small grains are carved out of the gold and carefully placed against the brilliant-cut diamond to hold it in place.

The individual parts of the locket, eight in all, are assembled and the individual photos are inserted. In a very last step, the surface is checked and finally a time-consuming polish is applied to make it mirror-like.

This piece of jewellery is made in our manufactory in the same way as it has been since the earliest days of the company in the 1890s. Only very few manufactories still possess the knowledge to produce jewellery in this way. The result convinces through its longevity, but above all through its beauty, which can only be created through genuine handwork by master craftsmen.
