In its relentless efforts of diversification and economic gains, the UAE opened its doors to the world that significantly defies the Emirati principles. However, while the Arab nation continues to seek for mergers with western corporations, it is often not free of clashes of opinions and ethics

Amidst such global ventures was an American law firm, Baker McKenzie. After 40 years of its presence in the Emirates, the company was forced to choose between its values and profitable partners

In September 2022, Baker McKenzie announced to part ways from its UAE partner, Dr Habib Al Mulla, who wrote critically about homosexuality on his social media, sparking controversy.

On his Twitter account, Mulla described homosexuality as “ugly”, which prompted a corporate divorce between Mulla and Baker McKenzie. The law firm disagreed with Mulla’s beliefs and personal views, and stated that his opinion on social media did not represent that of Baker McKenzie

The American firm said it wanted to “ensure an inclusive work environment for all”. The UAE, however, continues to be lacking, despite introducing several reforms. Homosexuality still remains illegal in the Gulf country, where a number of homophobic actions like a ban on “un-Islamic” Netflix content

Baker McKenzie appointed the head of investigations Borys Dackiw as an interim leader and was ensuring a “co-operative and swift separation” from Mulla, whose firm merged with Baker McKenzie in 2013.
