5 Tips to ride a motorcycle with a Pillion
Online course "The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler": https://rtw-adventures.com/online-cou...
In the last couple of years, I gave you so much advice for everything related to adventure motorcycle traveling, but I miss one very important topic and it is how to travel with a pillion. In this video, I will tell you everything I know about it.
All right now most of you think that because I travel alone I know nothing about it. In fact, it is exactly the opposite I travel alone because I know a lot about it!
I did a number of short trips and even one long, more than 6,000km with pillion and since then I said to myself – never again! With this, I am not saying that it is something bad or you shouldn’t do it, no absolutely not! This was the decision I token for myself, but your situation could be completely different.
N: 1 – Reduce the weight
Believe it or not, this will be the most difficult part and at the same time the most beneficial if you are able to win the battle of course. 20 – 25 kg of luggage is more than enough for two people and it doesn’t matter how long the trip will be.
N: 2 – Set some very strict rules
Stop once per two hours or whatever time you decide for your trips.
Find a place to hold and do not hit my helmet all the time.
Let me know before you decide to move, especially on low-speed maneuvers. It is classic for the pillion to think that because the speed is low it is safe to move, but in fact, it is exactly the opposite. The bike is much more stable at a high speed than at low speed trying to move between the traffic for example.
The rider doesn’t need help especially on the corners or the traffic lights Be like potato mesh. If you don’t know put a potato mesh in a chair and watch how it will react – absolutely still, if you tilt the chair it will tilt, when you straight in it will come with you. I hope you get the point.
N: 3 – Buy a quality Bluetooth communication system
It will make a significant difference in your trip. To be able to communicate while you ride, because most of the time you will spend riding, is so obvious that I cannot understand why some people miss it. Actually, I know one reason, but if this is your case I will advise traveling alone.
N: 4 – Change your riding style
To ride a motorcycle alone and with pillion are two completely different things and you will need different riding skills. I am not saying that you cannot ride the way you ride normally, but it will be too risky and I don’t think that the pillion will come with you again.
You have to accelerate and brake gentle, always keep more distance between you the cars in front of you and always keep in mind that you are not alone. 200kg bike with 100kg riders react one way, but the same bike with 100kg riders, 60kg passenger, and 30kg of luggage is completely different.
Here many might say – I have very powerful brakes with ABS and traction control. That’s great but these systems cannot make miracles, they will assist you, but not breaking for you. In the end you are the person who controls everything.
N: 5 – Forget about off-road riding.
You can do it in some smooth gravel roads if necessary, but I will advise sticking on the asphalt roads. Off-road riding with a pillion is not going to be a good experience for you and especially for your passenger. When you cannot stand on the pegs will be very difficult and in some situations impossible to control the bike.
Also, it will be very easy to damage the bike, the forks, the rims or the shock absorber, because of the weight. Keep in mind that even some of the most famous adventure bikes like GS1200 or KTM 1290 are not really designed to be ridden off-road with a passenger.
Do not even try it, because it might completely change your perception about off-road riding which I believe could be great fun, especially if you have the right motorcycle.
