One of Carl Jung's most well-known (and divisive) ideas is that of the collective unconscious. The portion of the unconscious mind known as "the collective unconscious" is responsible for the expression of inherited, universal themes that permeate all of human life. The concept occurred to him in a lucid dream.

The personal unconscious consists mostly of items that were formerly conscious but have vanished from consciousness due to forgetting or repression, whereas the collective unconscious does not owe its existence to human experience and is hence not a personal acquisition. The complexes that make up one's own psyche are different from the archetypes that populate the collective unconscious (or primordial images).

The term "archetype" refers to a type or pattern of behavior that is passed down through generations. They are indicative of universal, timeless patterns that are shared by all humans.
