"A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean": The Garifuna Collective presents the video for "Black Catbird" by the Garifuna Collective.

The video for "Black Catbird", made by Mexico's Casiopea collective is inspired by Mexico's strong textile tradition, presenting us with a tapestry of colour and sound being weaved together. The first part of the story begins with a reference to the traditional "camino de mesa", referencing the colours and natural dyes of these textiles.

The vertical threads weave together vegetation and snapshots of the threatened birds featured on the album from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. The representation of these species, their songs and their stories are paralleled by the traditions which is also under threat. The piece ends with an eye representing rebirth and how all these threads are part of something much bigger.

Casiopea is a mexican collective founded in 2013 by Alexandra Castellanos, Ana Cruz, Andrea Mondragón and Sandra Medina. Their work focuses on animation, design and illustration through different analogue and digital techniques. They work on different content including cultural, ecological and educational as well as short films or videoclips.

"A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean” is the second Volume in the series following on from "A Guide to the Birdsong of South America", originally released on Robin's label Rhythm and Roots. Volume I raised nearly 15,000 USD for two birding organisations and featured artists like Nicola Cruz, Dengue Dengue Dengue and Chancha Via Circuito.

For this second edition we have shifted focus north of the equator and to the vulnerability of bird species like the Momoto Carenado (Nicaragua), Ferminia (Cuba) and the Jamaican Blackbird (Jamaica), birds who have dwindled in numbers as a result of the environmental repercussions of climate change, deforestation and trapping for the pet trade.

El videoclip de "Black Catbird" de The Garifuna Collective se inspira de las historias plasmadas en textiles en la cultura mexicana, retomando la idea de la construcción de un textil tejido con telares artesanales.

Es un recorrido por una urdimbre (hilos verticales) que traman vegetación y aves centroamericanas en peligro de extinción. La primera parte toma como referencia un camino de mesa. Los colores se inspiraron por los tintes naturales con los que son teñidos estos textiles.

La representación de especies e historias en el textil son parte de una tradición que no queremos ver morir, al igual que las especies de aves en peligro que aquí son representadas. El ojo inicial y final nos cuenta sobre el renacer y como todo es parte de algo más grande.

Casiopea es un colectivo mexicano fundado en el 2013 por Alexandra Castellanos, Ana Cruz, Andrea Mondragón y Sandra Medina. Su trabajo está enfocado en la producción de animación, diseño e ilustración a través de la mezcla de técnicas análogas y digitales. Su principal contenido incluye la difusión cultural, ecológica y educativa, así como la creación de cortometrajes independientes, propiedad intelectual y videoclip.

"A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean" es una serie de discos de música inspirada por el canto de aves amenazadas con el fin de recaudar fondos para su protección. El Búho aka Robin Perkins nació en las tierras rocosas del norte de Inglaterra pero encontró su hogar musical en Latinoamérica, donde inició este proyecto.

Sobre el concepto, El Búho explica: "Elegimos 10 especies en peligro de extinción o amenazadas de una región específica y los emparejamos con 10 músicos o productores. Compartimos grabaciones de alta calidad del canto de cada especie y desafiamos a los artistas de crear una pieza de música original, inspirado por el ave y su canto."

Todos los beneficios se destinan a organizaciones de conservación trabajando para proteger las aves y su hábitat en la región.
