China is now offering electronic driving licenses in 28 cities including Beijing and Shanghai as part of an effort to facilitate more convenient public travel.

On Wednesday, 25 cities nationwide joined the pilot cities of Tianjin, Suzhou and Chengdu in rolling out the program. According to data from the Traffic Management Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security, some three million applications have been filed already in the newly added cities.

The digital driving licenses have the same legal validity as physical ones, and can be used during police stops, for car rentals, or when buying insurance, for example.

Drivers can apply for the e-licenses with a mobile app.

The licenses are welcomed by drivers for their easy access.

"It offers convenience. The clothes we wear in summer are thin, and (usually) have no pockets. It will be easy for me to forget where my driving license is if I have to find different places to put it in," said Ms. Lei, a driver.

Police officers said the electronic licenses are almost equivalent to traditional ones, but there are a few exceptions.

"When it is necessary to temporarily confiscate someone's driver's license, we will ask the driver to provide a physical driver's license for review. In other circumstances, people can just use the electronic ones. The digitalization brings greater convenience to people," said a police officer in Suzhou.

The police said electronic driving licenses recognized within the 28 cities are also accepted in other locations across the country.

Encryption and anti-counterfeiting technologies are used in the licenses for safety concerns.

China plans to issue digital driving licenses nationwide starting in 2022.

“它提供了方便。我們夏天穿的衣服很薄，而且（通常）沒有口袋。如果我必須找不同的地方放駕照，我很容易忘記我的駕照在哪裡，”司機雷女士說。

警方表示，電子駕照幾乎等同於傳統駕照，但也有一些例外。

“當需要暫時沒收某人的駕駛執照時，我們會要求司機提供實體駕駛執照以供審查。在其他情況下，人們只能使用電子的。 數字化給人們帶來了更大的便利，”一位蘇州警察說。

警方表示，28個城市認可的電子駕駛執照在全國其他地方也被接受。

出於安全考慮，許可證中使用了加密和防偽技術。

中國計劃從2022年開始在全國范圍內頒發數字駕駛執照。
