STORYLINE:
Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York led mass at Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center on Saturday during his visit to Israel and the occupied West Bank.

“A lot prayer, a lot hope, a lot of expression of support for all the good charity healthcare education and prayer for what's going on here. That's what's gonna work,” said Dolan after mass.

Dolan’s visit to the region comes amid six months of fighting in Gaza that have pushed the besieged Palestinian enclave into a deepening humanitarian crisis, with more than 1 million people on the brink of starvation.

Israeli bombardments and ground offensives in Gaza have killed more than 33,600 Palestinians.

The war started on Oct. 7 when Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis in a surprise attack, mostly civilians.

Around 250 people were also taken hostage by Palestinian militants.

"The purpose of the visit first of all is to solidarity to the Christian presence here and of course you cannot neglect the political, the complicated political situation,” said Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.
