Red Garland (May 13, 1923 – April 23, 1984) was an American jazz pianist known for his influential role in the Miles Davis Quintet and his distinctive block chord playing style. Born in Dallas, Texas, Garland initially trained on the clarinet and alto saxophone before transitioning to piano during his time in the U.S. Army.

In the 1950s, Garland became a key member of Miles Davis's first great quintet, alongside John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, and Davis himself. His elegant and rhythmic piano work can be heard on classic albums such as Workin', Steamin', Cookin', and Relaxin'. His style, influenced by Ahmad Jamal, brought a light yet sophisticated touch to jazz piano.

After leaving Davis's group in 1958, Garland pursued a solo career, recording numerous albums under Prestige Records, including A Garland of Red (1956), Groovy (1957), and Soul Junction (1957). His trio recordings showcased his smooth phrasing and blues-infused improvisation.

Garland returned to Texas in the late 1960s and performed sporadically until his passing in 1984. His legacy remains strong, influencing generations of jazz pianists with his lyrical and harmonically rich approach to the instrument.
