The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV Marks a Strong Addition to the Luxury EV Segment

As electric vehicles continue dominating the luxury auto market, Mercedes-Benz aims to stay ahead of the curve with its new 2024 EQE SUV. Slotting in below the flagship EQS SUV as the second electric SUV offering from Mercedes, the EQE brings competitive range, lavish appointments, and trademark Mercedes quality to this rapidly growing segment.

Starting at $79,050, the 2024 EQE SUV isn’t exactly cheap. But it’s priced right in line with rivals like the Audi e-tron, BMW iX, and Cadillac Lyriq. And for that sticker price, Mercedes delivers one of the most well-equipped and luxurious electric SUVs on the market.

Visually, the EQE wears the evolutionary styling we’ve come to expect from Mercedes’ EQ electric sub-brand. The grille-free front fascia, full-width light bar, and smooth, curved bodywork give it a sleeker and less awkward look than the larger EQS. Around back, slim LED taillights emphasize width for a planted, athletic stance. Large 20-inch alloy wheels come standard across the range.

Power comes from a lithium-ion battery pack and single electric motor in the base EQE350+ rear-wheel drive model. Output sits at 288 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, good for a 5.6-second 0-60 mph time. Step up to the EQE350 4Matic and you get dual motors for all-wheel drive without any added power. But the new-for-2024 EQE500 brings a dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain with 402 total system horsepower and 633 lb-ft, cutting the 0-60 dash down to just 4.5 seconds.

Underpinning it all is Mercedes’ EVA2 electric vehicle platform. An air suspension system and rear-axle steering come standard for a smooth, quiet ride and enhanced maneuverability in tight spaces. Mercedes also equips the EQE with heat pumps for the HVAC system, improving cold-weather range by reducing resistance from electric heating.

Speaking of range, Mercedes estimates the rear-drive EQE350+ will travel up to 279 miles between charges. That’s slightly behind the 300+ mile estimates of the BMW iX and Cadillac Lyriq, but ahead of Audi’s e-tron. The EQE SUV’s 90.6 kWh battery pack can rapid charge at speeds up to 170 kW, topping off 10-80% in just 32 minutes.

Of course, Mercedes put just as much attention into the interior as the mechanics. Available in five or seven-passenger configurations, the EQE SUV provides a truly first-class environment. Quilted Nappa leather seats are heating, ventilating, and come with a massage function. Four-zone climate control, 64-color ambient lighting, an air purification system, and a massive panoramic sunroof further enhance luxury.

Mercedes’ latest MBUX infotainment interface runs the show, combining a standard 12.8-inch OLED touch display and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The extensive list of standard tech includes navigation with augmented reality, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Burmester surround sound system, wireless phone charging, and an extensive suite of driver assists.

Speaking of which, Mercedes packs the EQE with everything from blind spot monitoring and parking sensors to more advanced systems like hands-free automated driving aids. It brings the brand’s latest DRIVE PILOT Level 3 conditional automation to the segment for the first time.

But perhaps the EQE’s Achilles heel lies in cargo space. With just 18.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats, cargo room trails luxury SUVs with gas engines considerably. Remember, the battery pack has to go somewhere. Fold the rear seats down and space grows to a modest 57.5 cubic feet. Towing capacity sits at just 2,000 pounds.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV clearly prioritizes luxury, refinement, and technology over utility and affordability. But for deep-pocketed buyers seeking an electric luxury SUV with style and panache, few alternatives exude such prestige and innovation. It’s a definitive statement of intent as Mercedes charges boldly into the all-electric future.
