Why does my printer do this?
Whenever your Canon printer prints or turned on it will use a small amount or ink to keep the printhead fresh. Your printer uses substantially more ink when you perform cleaning or deep cleaning cycles from your printer, as the printer actively flushes ink through the printhead in an attempt to dislodge dried/congealed ink. As you can imagine all of the ink used in these procedures needs somewhere to go, so your Canon inkjet printer funnels it towards the ink absorber.
Your printer estimates how full the absorber is by keeping record of how many pages have been printed, how many cleans have been performed and anything else that produces waste ink. Once it believes the ink absorber is getting full you will receive the Canon E08 message as we have already discussed.
Is there anything I can do to stop this?
Sadly not, your printer needs to use a small amount of ink to keep supplying you with top quality prints. Once the absorber is full Canon recommend calling a service centre to get the counter reset and the sponges inside changed. However in most cases the absorber will not yet be physically full and the printer capable of printing many more pages before it begins to overflow.
With this in mind many people however opt to reset the counter themselves using one of the reset guides available online for their particular printer. The ink absorber will however eventually become full and at this point the ink will overflow into the printer or even onto your desk. As such we advise either protecting whatever surface you keep the printer on, or if you are feeling brave replacing the ink absorber in the bottom of your Canon printer yourself.
