Every year, the world produces more than 410,000 tons of silk, according to the International Sericultural Commission. Yet it all begins with something fragile — the cocoon of a silkworm no bigger than your thumb. To make just one kilogram of silk, it takes about 2,500 silkworms, each spinning a single thread nearly one kilometer long.
