The islands of the Pacific are the primary wintering ground for this majestic long-billed migrant. In the summer months it breeds on the remote tundra of northwestern Alaska, but as the name suggests, it is capable of extremely long migratory flights as far south as Tahiti. The Hawaiians named it the Kioea. The Bristle-thighed Curlew stongly resembles the Whimbrel, but the Kioea has a buffier rump and is more golden overall. The feathers are bristled at the thigh. The curve of the bill is also slightly more pronounced. The call is a loud “chee-uu-whit”. It is a shy bird that prefers secluded areas of short grass or undisturbed sand.
