Surah Al-A‘la (سورة الأعلى) is the 87th chapter of the Qur’an, revealed in Makkah, and contains 19 verses. The name "Al-A‘la" means "The Most High", and it refers to Allah’s supreme and exalted nature.
It is a short yet profoundly spiritual Surah that was beloved by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who often recited it in Jumu‘ah (Friday) and Eid prayers.
Main Themes of Surah Al-A‘la:
1. Glorification of Allah (Verses 1–5)
The Surah begins with the command:
"Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High."
These opening verses praise Allah’s creative power:
He created, proportioned, and guided.
He brings forth pasture, then turns it into black stubble—a symbol of life and death, growth and decay.
This points to Allah’s perfect control over nature and time.
2. Revelation and the Prophet’s Mission (Verses 6–8)
Allah reassures the Prophet ﷺ:
“We will make you recite, and you will not forget.”
Except what Allah wills—meaning memory and understanding are under divine control.
The verses remind the Prophet ﷺ that the message is protected, and his mission is to convey it without fear, for those who fear Allah will benefit, while others will turn away.
3. Reminder of the Hereafter (Verses 9–13)
These verses contrast the righteous and the wicked:
Those who fear Allah and remember Him will benefit from the reminder.
While the wicked will avoid it, and eventually be cast into the great Fire (Hell), where they will neither die nor live—a description of eternal suffering.
4. The Success of the One Who Purifies Himself (Verses 14–17)
"He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself, remembers the name of his Lord, and prays."
This highlights that spiritual success lies in:
Inner purification
Remembrance of Allah
Regular prayer (Salah)
The Surah ends by warning against preferring the life of this world over the Hereafter, which is better and everlasting.
5. Continuity with Earlier Scriptures (Verse 18–19)
"Indeed, this is in the former scriptures. The scriptures of Abraham and Moses."
This shows that the core message of Islam—Tawheed (Oneness of Allah), the Hereafter, and righteous living—was present in previous revelations too.
Key Messages of Surah Al-A‘la:
Glorify and remember Allah, who is the Most High and the Creator.
Revelation is preserved and the Prophet is guided by Allah.
Success lies in purification, remembrance, and prayer.
The Hereafter is far better than the worldly life.
The message of the Qur’an is not new, but a continuation of earlier divine teachings.
Why It’s Significant:
Surah Al-A‘la is deeply spiritual, meditative, and filled with reminders about divine authority, the temporary nature of this world, and the reality of the Hereafter. It is recited regularly in Friday, Eid, and Witr prayers, reflecting its importance in Islamic worship.
