Sound #1: “Conk-la-ree!”
The song of a male Red-winged Blackbird sounds like “conk-la-ree" or “o-ka-lee.”
It’s a classic sound that is common to hear in wetlands across North America.
The song starts with an abrupt note, which then turns into a musical trill.
Look for males singing this song from a high perch.
While making this sound, they lean forward, droop their wings, spread their tail feathers, and fluff out their bright should patches.

Sound #2: “check” or “chip” contact call
These contact calls are made by both males and females. You can hear these sounds year-round.
It is used for many situations, such as staying in contact with each other, during feeding, and while flying.

Sound #3: “chak chak chak”
If you walk through a marsh or wetland, it’s common to hear this alarm call.
This sound is a fast, scolding “chak chak chak.”
It's commonly made by females while guarding their nest.

Sound #4: “jeer”
This call sounds like a downward, slurred whistle.
It’s an alarm call given by males.
Listen for it the next time you enter a wetland area. “Watch out, here comes a human!”
