The largest banyan tree of Asia, Mallick Purer Batgachh is located eight kilometers to the east of Kaligonj. The tree lies on twenty bighas of land, its height is ninety six feet and it has one thousand four hundred and sixty sub-trunks. An old man tells me about the birth of the tree. The supposedly largest banyan tree of Asia in Suitala-Mallikpur of Maliat union under Kaliganj upazila is facing decay due to lack of preservation measures. The Inspection Bungalow (IB) of the Jhenidah district council, adjacent to the tree, is also facing the same fate. The tree is located in Suitala-Mallikpur of Bethuli mouja, about 10 km east from the upazila headquarters of Kaliganj. It covers an area of 11 acres. Lack of proper care and maintenance is responsible for the demise of the century-old tree. According to locals, the tree is more than 200 years old. It gives shade to weary pedestrians and others; it is also as a shelter for thousands of birds. As the myth says, Shaila Bala, the wife of Nagen Sen, an influential person of the area, transplanted the tree ages ago to provide comfort locals. After the death and migration of members of that family, the land has been acquired by the government and recorded in khas khatian.
