Heidi Haynes, MN, CRNP, OCN, of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Board of Directors joined Cancer Nursing Today to share key highlights from the 50th Annual ONS Congress and the opening ceremony.
“Every year we say, ‘This is the best opening ceremony ever,’ and this just takes the cake,” Haynes said. “In honor of the 50th, it was a wonderful, amazing job that the ONS Committee did to prepare for this historic event.”
She explained the impact of seeing thousands of oncology nurses attend the opening ceremony and what it meant to for nurses to reflect on the “history of oncology nursing from where ONS started to where we are today and all of the progress that we've made through the hard work of others that have come before us.”
“We're very fortunate to still be able to see and hear from some of those that came before us,” Haynes said. “It was a wonderful opportunity to hear from past and present CEOs and the insights in the history that they had to bring to the table today.”
Beyond the opening ceremony, Haynes said she was excited to meet with attendees, including many nurses who were first-time attendees of the ONS Congress.
“It's so exciting to see what they're experiencing for the first time,” Haynes said.
She said it’s important to encourage first-time attendees to take advantage of the wealth of opportunities at the ONS Congress.
“It goes beyond the top-notch education that's being offered,” she said, emphasizing that it’s important for attendees to be taking “the time to make those connections by reaching out to someone that you might not know and seeing where their nursing practice is leading and maybe incorporating some of those best practices into your nursing care.”
With all of these opportunities for learning and connection, ONS Congress experiences can leave a lasting impact on attendees.
“You will make friends for life. You'll attend Congress again next year and see the same people and be able to make that reconnection,” Haynes said. “Networking, education, having fun, that's what this Congress is all about.”
