My Day in SAVONLINNA Did NOT Go To Plan! 🇫🇮

My day in Savonlinna Finland exploring the small & mostly wooden town centre & the historic Olavinlinna Castle built by the Swedes to deter a Russian invasion - but my time there didn’t go to plan!

Olavinlinna Castle is a historic fortification located on an island in Lake Saimaa close to the town centre of Savonlinna. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area and one of Finland's most recognisable sights.

Olavinlinna Castle is also known as St Olaf’s Castle in Swedish and was built in the Kyromsalmi Strait during the 15th century. I bought an admission ticket and made my way inside for a walk about - however things didn’t go to plan and I ended up in a Finnish hospital following a mishap inside.

Before that though I took a walk around the stone courtyard and defensive walls, learnt about why the island was chosen and not others that are further north, and joined a few other tourists in taking a peek inside.

Thankfully before the accident forced me to change my plans I had taken a brief tour of Savonlinna town centre with its wooden buildings and cobbled streets, and checked out my accommodation at the Savonlinnan Kristillinen Opisto Wanha Pappila after a room tour at the property.
