Many household chemicals and items are strongly fluorescent under long-wave UV light. Highlighters, pens and disposable cutlery contain fluorescent dyes to catch the attention. Banknotes and stamps are printed with fluorescent inks. Tonic water and multivitamin tablets contain fluorescent natural products. Laundry detergents show a blue fluorescence due to optical brighteners. Sunscreens, instead, contain substances which absorb UV light. Lastly, a brief comparison between fluorescence and phosphorescence is presented, using paints as examples.
