The Weird Nostalgia of Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home is a pretty weird film.

People have long criticised the MCU and modern superhero fare more widely for feeling more corporate than cinematic, but in some ways, and in some scenes, I think Spider-Man: No Way Home is the first time that studio machinery is almost visible in real-time behind the movie. In this video, I suggest the contrasting, perhaps incompatible studio objectives which gave rise to No Way Home are to blame for the handful of strange choices and general, pervasive feeling of... weirdness at play in the film. Oh, also, if my voice sounds weird and hoarse in the video, it's because I accidentally deleted the first half of the voiceover, and had to start over. Oops!

Spider-Man: No Way Home is a 2021 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, co-produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and the 27th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Benedict Wong, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire. Spider-Man seeks the help of Doctor Strange to forget his exposed secret identity as Peter Parker. However, Strange's spell goes horribly wrong, leading to unwanted guests entering their universe.
