The Beauty of Thief

Thief is arguably the most underrated film ever made and in my opinion, easily a top 5 neo-noir flick of all time. In Mann’s impressive directorial debut, we, as the audience, traverse through the rain-slicked, neon-brimmed city of Chicago as Caan’s Frank. Albeit being very slow paced and dialogue heavy, the highly sleek and stylised cinematography which would later become Mann’s auteur coupled with Caan’s exemplary performance as Frank, sharp and snappy dialogue and a mesmerising soundtrack by Tangerine Dream makes this neo-noir classic a must-see. Despite the fact that great films such as Heat and Manhunter exist, Thief is a film most heavily overlooked in Mann’s filmography. I implore everyone to see this film as it is a personal favourite of mine and possibly has some of the greatest cinematography I have ever seen condensed into one film.
