Melodious Blackbird (Dives dives)

The scientific name of this bird is quite funny, as the genus and specie is the same: Dives and dives, which in this case have nothing to do with diving, actually it comes from the Latin meaning “costly or rich”, probably because of the very shinny look of the Melodious Blackbird, as well as its proud look.

In Costa Rica it is quite easy to identify this bird, as there is few members of the Icteridae family that are completely black, the other is the Bronzed Cowbird but has a very restricted distribution only at the Southern Caribbean. The Melodious Blackbird is a wide spread and fairly common bird in the country, it can be find in both slopes from sea level up to 1,800 meters.
