In this episode, I dive into how to create a Digital Cinema Package (DCP) using the free software DCP-O-Matic, and why it’s essential for screening your film at festivals and theaters today. DCP optimizes the image to be projected with high quality and minimal artifacts. it also includes info for how the theater should adjust the screen and what resolution to project and other info.

My documentary Video Dreams: A VHS Massacre Story was recently selected for both the Torino Underground Cinefest and the BIFA-qualifying Spirit of Independence Film Festival—and both required a properly made DCP to exhibit the film. While the DCP didn’t get me into these festivals, it was absolutely necessary to screen.

Think of a DCP as the modern digital equivalent of a 35mm film print—the professional standard expected by most venues. And while there’s still nothing like seeing a real 35mm print projected in a theater, a well-made DCP is what keeps most independent films alive on the big screen today.
