Tying a BETTER Peeking or Peeping Cased Caddis Larva. Mother's Day Caddis. This pattern was developed by George Anderson of Livingston, MT. He designed the 'Peeking Caddis' in the 1970s to imitate Mother's Day caddis of the Yellowstone River

The Brachycentridae family, known as the humpless casemaker caddisflies, features larvae that uniquely lack a pronounced first abdominal segment, giving them a distinctive appearance. Unlike their more mobile counterparts, these larvae construct portable, four-sided cases that taper like chimneys, using bits of aquatic debris glued together with an adhesive secreted from their mouths. This unique construction allows them to secure their cases with silken anchor lines, enabling them to forage for food while remaining safely tethered in the current. Typically found in fast-flowing waters, they anchor themselves to rocks at the heads of riffles, where they thrive. Caddisfly hatches, which occur from April through October, begin with the prolific emergence of species like Brachycentrus, or the American grannom, around late April, coinciding with the Hendrickson hatches. With their tannish to bright green, segmented bodies and dark heads, clusters of these remarkable larvae can often be observed clustered together on the same rock, showcasing their intriguing adaptations to life in swift currents.
