This week we begin one of the most anticipated projects on the property. With Thierry’s help and his fifteen-ton excavator, we finally start reshaping the steep soil walls behind the barns. It is a project we have wanted to tackle ever since the hill was excavated, and seeing it take shape feels like a big step forward. Along the way, we uncover several natural water springs, address one of our biggest long term water issues, create a new access road to the upper part of the property, and dig a wide, shallow swale to better guide the rainwater around the barns. Later that week Philippe and I head to the vegetable garden to harvest our winter vegetables, including Brussels sprouts and broccoli. That same evening, life takes a beautiful turn when our baby girl, Gracie, decides it is finally time to arrive. We share a few snippets from those first precious days as we begin settling into life as a family of four. Odin meets his baby sister for the first time, family comes to visit, and we take a moment to simply be together before everyone returns to Belgium and we slowly find our new rhythm. By the end of the week, Philippe and Odin return to the project behind the barns to add a final touch. They plant the young willow trees along the newly dug swale, giving this reshaped landscape a bit of life and setting the stage for how this area will grow and change in the years to come.
