Several journalists, including myself recently reported on a captain with the Deland police department in Florida after that captain allegedly posted videos publicly on social media. Those videos appear to show the captain in uniform and driving a department vehicle. The video appears to show the uniform driver, recording himself while driving and holding The phone in one hand. In one video, the seatbelt chime can be heard sounding as the driver and juvenile front passenger appear to have no seatbelt.
These videos were sent to journalist by anonymous sources, possibly from within the department. Sources within the department say that aside from a seatbelt policy and forced by the department policy also prohibits personal use of department vehicles. In the video with the minor, the driver can be heard saying he is taking the minor to a friend’s house for trick-or-treating leading some to speculate that the vehicle is being used for personal use.
After very briefly covering This matter of public interest involving public employees journalist were sent a cease and desist letter. The demands was in the letter appear to include demanding that journalist no longer report on this police captain or this police department.
