Observation, as a method for collecting qualitative data, entails spending time in natural or native settings with the subject of interest or where the object of interest unfolds and is expressed. Although very enjoyable, this is time-consuming for researchers and often inconvenient for research participants. So, researchers strive to be efficient in collecting as much relevant data as possible. This requires careful and practical planning, as well as flexibility. In this video, I outline the many choices, decisions, and judgements to be made and what I take into consideration when using the observation method.
