💡 In this insightful webinar, we explore how Earth Observation (EO) technologies are being used to monitor rangeland carrying capacity and support sustainable land management across Africa. Dr. Michael Marshall presents cutting-edge research on how satellite data and geospatial models can be leveraged to estimate forage productivity, monitor livestock density, and inform grazing strategies at regional scales.

💡 The session introduces the ecological concept of carrying capacity—the maximum number of animals a rangeland can support without degradation—through the lens of the Noy-Meir model. While traditional grazing models offer ecological depth, they are often impractical for large-scale application. Here, EO tools such as vegetation indices, dry matter productivity (e.g., Sentinel-3), and machine learning are shown to provide scalable, data-driven insights. The ESA LUISA project is highlighted as a real-world application that enables decision-makers to track changes in biomass, forage availability, and rangeland health.

Dr. Michael Marshall, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente. His research spans crop modelling, satellite-based drought monitoring, and sustainable agriculture. He leads several ESA-funded projects, including LUISA, HyRELIEF, and EO4NUTRI, and has been awarded fellowships from USGS, Switzer, and Fulbright for research excellence.
