Introduced: Government announced on 8 June 2025, applications open 29 September 2025 (immigration.govt.nz).


Purpose: Long-term multi‑entry visitor visa for parents (or, in some cases, grandparents) of NZ citizens/residents. Can stay up to 5 years, with a one-time renewal, for a possible total of 10 years (immigration.govt.nz).



📌 Eligibility & Sponsorship
Who can apply: Biological or adopted parents of NZ citizens/residents (limited grandparent inclusion possible) (immigration.govt.nz).


Sponsor: Must be the NZ-based child (or adult sibling + partner) who agrees to financially support and cover essential costs—including accommodation, health, repatriation, and deportation relief (immigration.govt.nz).


Multi-sponsorship allowed: Child plus partner or adult sibling can co-sponsor (en.wikipedia.org).



💵 Financial Requirements
Applicants must meet one of three tests:
Sponsor income: Earning at least NZ median wage (or 1.5× for joint sponsors), plus additional 0.5× for each extra parent (immigration.govt.nz).


Parent income: Personal annual income at least NZ Super rate (≈ NZD 32,611 for individuals; ≈ NZD 49,553 for couples) (immigration.govt.nz).


Parent assets: Savings of ≥ NZD 160,000 (individual) or ≥ NZD 250,000 (couple) (immigration.govt.nz).



✅ Health, Character & Insurance
Health & Character: Must meet residence-grade health and good character standards.


Health insurance: Mandatory at all times, with minimum coverage such as:


Emergency care: NZD 250,000/year


Cancer treatment: NZD 100,000

Recheck requirements: Initial medical exam upon application and another during year 3 (offshore) to continue in the programme (pittandmoore.co.nz).



💰 Fees & Processing
Visa cost: NZD 3,000 (standard) or NZD 2,450 (Pacific fee band) + NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation & Tourism Levy (immigration.govt.nz).


Year‑3 medical fee: NZD 325 (or NZD 240 for Pacific band) (immigration.govt.nz).


Processing time: Approx. 4 months, although likely longer than standard visitor visas due to complexity (immigration.govt.nz).



🔁 Visa Conditions & Renewal
Multi‑entry visa: Parents can enter/exit NZ multiple times during visa validity (aimsglobal.co.nz).


Offshore requirements:


Must apply from outside NZ.


Must leave during Year 3 for medical re-assessment (immigration.govt.nz).


No work/study rights: Can only study short-term (max three months/year); remote work allowed but may trigger NZ tax obligations (immigration.govt.nz).
