Welcome back to our new vlogs! Join us as we embark on an exciting one-day bike trip from Bangalore to two historically significant locations: Somanathapura and Talakadu.

Somanathapura: Channakeshava Temple and Its Rich History

Our first stop is Somanathapura, about 135 km from Bangalore, home to the magnificent Channakeshava Temple, a masterpiece of Hoysala architecture. Built in 1268 AD by Soma, a general of Hoysala king Narasimha III, this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is renowned for its star-shaped design and intricate carvings that beautifully depict stories from the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and various incarnations of Vishnu.

An interesting fact about this temple is that no pooja (worship) is performed here anymore. The temple was desecrated during invasions by Muslim rulers, and as per tradition, once a temple is damaged, rituals cease. However, despite the lack of worship, the Channakeshava Temple remains a prominent heritage site, offering a deep dive into Karnataka’s rich history and craftsmanship.

Talakadu: The Mysterious Desert Town
After soaking in the beauty of Somanathapura, we headed towards Talakadu, just 45 km away. Talakadu is famous for its mysterious transformation into a desert town, with its once thriving land now covered by sand dunes. This ancient town, located on the banks of the Cauvery River, was once the capital of the Ganga Dynasty.

The highlight of Talakadu is its Panchalinga Temples, a group of five temples:
1. Vaidyanatheswara Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva)
2. Arkeshwara Temple
3. Pataleshwara Temple
4. Maruleshwara Temple
5. Mallikarjuna Temple

These temples are central to the Panchalinga Darshana, a major pilgrimage event held once every 12 years. The town's history is linked to the curse of Rani Alamelamma, a local queen who is believed to have cursed the region, causing the sand to engulf the town. This legendary tale, coupled with the unique landscape of Talakadu, adds a sense of mystery and intrigue to this spiritual destination.

Our Journey
We kicked off early from Bangalore, riding through scenic roads for about 3 hours to reach Somanathapura. The temple’s architecture and history took us back in time. Afterward, we rode to Talakadu, where the sand-covered temples and the captivating story of Rani Alamelamma added to the adventure.

On our way, we took a break at a cozy Udupi mess for lunch, indulging in some delicious South Indian fare before continuing our exploration.
