The appearance of any stone work largely depends on the quality of the materials. This is a common denominator of any construction project using natural materials.

Building columns with field stone is moderately difficult due to the need for many corner stones. Stone is easiest to cut in the quarry when fresh from the ground. Old recycled stone, especially granites and quartz, are tough.

When building with a locally acquired stone, it is useful to study local stone work that dates to about the 1880’s or earlier. Masons of the 18th and 19th Century had a firm understanding of their medium, stone, that we generally lack today.

Here, I took a brief look at a local church built in 1729. Some of my ancestors had a hand in its construction. Nothing new to someone with family that’s been living in one area for over 350 years.

Alright, that’s enough. I’ll cover this subject in more detail in a month or two. Or all of these subjects. So much material to cover and I’ve barely scratched the surface!

Perhaps you wonder why I’ve begun narrating my presentations in very bad French. Well, that’s easy. My editing style is easy and I’m probably going to stick with it. No music. No fuss. Nothing challenging. I want to practice my French. I am certain that my butchery of the French language may be insulting to my French cousins. However, I don’t care about that. The treatment of some of my French Huguenot ancestors makes me a bit callous when it comes to French feelings. The worst punishment of all? Forcing my ancestors to go and live among the Germans!!!! Torture them, murder them, whatever, those can be forgiven. But making them live among the barbarians! Fortunately, old Jacob Cacheau suffered that horror but a few years before he crossed the Atlantic to live among the English. However, his name became “Casho” and that in itself was a dreadful fate.

Anyway, in my research, I learned to read and write in French. Many early texts were in that language and it was essential. However, being surrounded by people of limited interest in anything beyond their own pockets and bellies, I never had an opportunity to learn to speak or listen to French. By narrating my videos thus, I add a new challenge that I enjoy immensely.
