Lately, I’ve been working on some tea pitchers in my studio for an exciting upcoming project, and I thought I’d share the process of making one with you! In this video, I’ll show you how I throw a Chahai on the potter’s wheel using approximately 280 grams of dark stoneware clay.

A Chahai, or tea pitcher, plays an essential role in tea rituals, especially in Gongfu tea ceremonies. It serves as the vessel for pouring brewed tea from the teapot or gaiwan before it is served into cups, ensuring even flavor distribution.

Designing a Chahai comes with its own set of challenges. It must not only look elegant but also feel comfortable to hold. The gripping area near the rim is especially crucial—it needs to stay cool enough for the user to handle. Equally important is how it pours: does the tea flow smoothly, and does the spout stop cleanly without dripping or leaking? These are the small but vital details I’ve been refining as I create these vessels.
