Mark Rylance plays Dr. Semmelweiss 'a man who sees things that aren't there, including the truth'

Dr Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian physician newly appointed as an obstetrician at the hospital, wants to know why so many more women are dying under the care of doctors.

His controversial discovery, which led to his ex-communication from the medical establishment and drove him to madness, is the subject of a new play opening in London in July, starring Mark Rylance.

New Scientist spoke with Mark Rylance, writer Stephen Brown and director Tom Morris, about their new play Dr Semmelweis, which spotlights the work of this maverick obstetrician.
