In this lesson, you will learn about the concept of atomic mass of the elements of the periodic table. Atomic mass measures the inertia intrinsic to all material objects. On the periodic table, it is calculated by multiplying the mass of the isotope by its fractional abundance and summing over all of the isotopes in nature. We also discuss mass defect, which explains the phenomena that the mass of an element is always smaller than the individual masses of the protons and neutrons inside.
