Astronomers have discovered a completely new type of planet — worlds where water dominates everything.

Kepler-138c and Kepler-138d are exoplanets orbiting a small red dwarf star located 218 light-years away in the constellation Lyra. Unlike Earth, these planets are not rocky. Despite being about 1.5 times larger than Earth, they have surprisingly low densities, suggesting that a massive portion of their interiors is made of water rather than stone or metal.

Scientists believe that up to half of each planet’s volume could be water, existing as deep global oceans beneath thick, steamy atmospheres. The pressure would be extreme, and temperatures likely high, creating environments unlike anything found on Earth.

These worlds are often compared to scaled-up versions of Jupiter’s icy moons, such as Europa and Enceladus — but on a planetary scale. Because of their size and composition, they challenge the traditional categories of “rocky Earth-like planets” and “gas giants,” forming a new class known as water worlds or mini-Neptunes.

Even more intriguing, Kepler-138d lies within its star’s habitable zone, the region where liquid water could theoretically exist. While the conditions are likely too hot for life as we know it, the discovery proves that water-rich planets are common in the galaxy.
