Today it’s about our 233 Pope in Apostolic Succession that is Pope Paul V . During his time as head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Paul V served as both a religious leader and a skillful political leader.

Few Facts

Pope Paul V was born in Rome in September of 1552 as Camillo Borghese. He began his career in the Catholic Church as a canon lawyer after intense study at universities in Padua and Perugia.

Paul V was made a cardinal by Pope Clement VIII in 1596 and eventually became Cardinal-Vicar of Rome.

After the only 27-day reign of Pope Leo XI, the Catholic Church scrambled to choose a new pope in the papal conclave of May 1605. In the end, the conclave chose Borghese on 16 May 1605. He took the name Paul V.

Papacy and contributions

• Pope Paul V was Pious, learned, charitable and hard-working. Being a canon lawyer, he believed rules were made to be kept, and his rigorous enforcement of the Trent reform decrees caused a deal of rustling in Roman ecclesiastical circles.


• The first and by far most famous incident involved a dispute with the Republic of Venice over ecclesiastical jurisdiction and the relations between Church and State. But in the end, the dispute between Pope Paul V and the Venetians was mediated by King Henry IV of France.

• King James l of England also gave trouble to Pope Paul. He issued a new oath of allegiance which, cunningly worded, was considered acceptable by some Catholics. Pope Paul V had to condemn this oath twice, and even so, it made for division among the English Catholics.

• Pope Paul did much to promote missionary work and reinforced discipline among the religious orders.  In 1610, he canonized St. Charles Borromeo and Francesca Romana, as well as beatified Ignatius Loyola, Francis Xavier, Philip Neri, and Teresa of Avila.  He strictly enforced, without exception, episcopal residence and in 1612, he approved the Congregation of the Oratory.
 
• Also, being a patron of the arts, he commissioned Carlo Maderno to complete the construction of St. Peter’s and fortunately for scholars, initiated a collection of secret archives in the Vatican. 

Pope Paul V died on 28 January 1621 of illness and was succeeded by Pope Gregory XV. His remains were placed in the magnificent Borghese chapel in St. Mary Major's.
