What Causes Cleft Lip And Cleft Palate? | symptoms, Causes And Treatment (Urdu/Hindi)

Cleft lip and palate are abnormality in which children have split lips and palate by birth. In this condition, patients feel difficulty swallowing food and liquids and liquid food may leak through nose. Cleft lips and palate may also cause breathing difficulty in some patients. The abnormality of cleft lips and palate can be treated surgically within two years of birth. Currently, one in every seven hundred children born with cleft lips and palate condition worldwide.
Causes of cleft lips and cleft palate
The abnormality of cleft lips and palate occur due to some genetic and environmental factors during fetus development. If such genetic mutations occur during fetus development that affect proper fusion of lips and mouth palate, a cleft means cleavage forms in our lips and mouth palate. This is called cleft lips and cleft palate.
Similarly, some environmental factors related to pregnant women such as smoking, alcohol abusing, folic acid deficiency and certain medicines etc, affect fusion of lips and mouth muscles during fetus development and result in formation of cleft lips and palate.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Mostly, cleft lips and palate abnormality is diagnosed during fetus development or at the time of birth. However, in some cases, cleft may be so small that it is much difficult to detect cleft at the time of birth. Such clefts are diagnosed later in life.
Cleft lips and palate abnormality is usually treated through multiple surgeries within two years of age. While speech and feeding therapy is recommended to patients after surgery to improve language and feeding problems.
