Ecology and Epidemiology of Chagas Disease in the US - 22 March 2022

Viewers will learn about the recognized distribution of human and animal Chagas disease, and the ecological factors that lead to Trypanosoma cruzi parasite transmission. The triatomine insect vectors and wildlife reservoirs that interact to create disease risk will be highlighted. Ongoing research initiatives that encompass a One Health approach will be presented, including: longitudinal clinical studies and upcoming interventional studies of at-risk dogs in the southern US; investigations of wildlife reservoirs; studies of vector biology and control; and community science initiatives. The complex ecology of Trypanosoma cruzi requires an integrated approach across human and animal health disciplines for surveillance and control.
