Caroline John was born in York in 1940. Acting from an early age, she made a name for herself at the RCS and then went on to star on screen in 'Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles', 'Agatha Christie's Poirot', 'The House of Elliot', 'Silent Witness', 'Midsomer Murders' and as Sam's grandmother in the 2003 box office hit 'Love Actually'. She also appeared in comedy as the exasperated maid to feuding housemates in 'Harry Enfield's Television Programme'. These are but a few of her television and film credits. Her final screen appearance was in the soap opera 'Doctors' in 2008.

Best known as feisty scientist Liz Shaw in the BBC science fiction drama 'Doctor Who', she appeared alongside Jon Pertwee's third Doctor and Nicolas Courtney as the Brigadier. She first appeared to battle Autons in 'Spearhead from Space' (1970). She also encountered Silurians, as well as creatures made of deadly radiation, and played a Gestapo version of her character when the Doctor travelled to a fascist alternative England in the serial 'Inferno'.
Despite being a regular in just one season, the fans never forgot her and she reprised the role of Miss Shaw in the 20th and 30th anniversary specials respectively ('The Five Doctors', 1983, and 'Dimensions in Time', 1993 - the latter reuniting her with co-star Jon Pertwee for the last time).
She also worked on a number of independent Doctor Who related films and audio plays.

She was married to fellow actor Geoffrey Beevers, who also appeared in Doctor Who as the villainous Master. She leaves not only her husband but also three offspring.
